The 11th seeded Japanese tennis player Joji Miyao was defeated 0-2 by non-seeded Briton player, Matthew Hanlin, here Thursday in the first tennis match of the men's singles of the Universiade which was officially opened on Wednesday.
Hanlin, world No. 1,325, broke one serve of Miyao, rated 886, in each set, and won the match with two identical scores of 6-4. The British student's serve was obviously more powerful and accurate in the match, and the Japanese also made more unforced errors.
"I served well in the match and did not give him any chance to break," Hanlin told reporters after the match.
"I have never met the Japanese before," he said, adding that he just tried his best to do well in the match.
Before coming to Beijing, Hanlin took part in a number of competitions in China's Hong Kong and Taiwan. "The climate there is too hot and humid," he said. "But I feel good here," he added.
More than 100 male student players have registered to compete in the men's singles of the Universiade tennis games.
