Morocco upset title favorites France 2-1 Thursday to become the first team securing a berth in the quarter-finals of the men's soccer tournament at the ongoing University Games.
In the other Group C match on Thursday, Brazil held off Uruguay 2-1 for their first victory at the Games after drawing with France 1-1 in Tuesday's opener.
The Moroccans, who downed Uruguay 2-0 on Tuesday, now have six points with one game left. Brazil had four and France one while the Uruguayans have already been eliminated from the top eight of the 16-squad tournament after two consecutive losses.
Matias Rogerio scored one and had a hand on the other to lift Brazil to the victory at the Shijingshan Stadium.
Brazil dominated the opening stages and they took a well- deserved lead in the 26th minutes when De Feritas Junio sent the ball over Uruguayan goalkeeper Welker Gunzalo off a back pass from Rogerio in the box.
Rogerio himself added a second for Brazil in the dying minutes of the first half by tapping in the ball after Analleto Eduardo beat Uruguay's off-side trap and rounded the goalkeeper to feed him.
Uruguay roused themselves after the break and made it 2-1 in the 51st minute with Dellonacte's close-range volley shot.
Both team came close to scoring several times thereafter but neither found the net.
Brazil will play Morocco in Saturday's final preliminary group match and France face Uruguay.
