French fencer Matthieu Denis won France's first gold medal at the 21st World University Games after defeating his Ukrainian rival Maksym Khvorost in the final of men's individual epee fencing.
Denis, gold medalist of team epee at the 20th Universiade 1999, frustrated the European champion 15-10.
