Mixed coniferous broad-leaved forests dominated by Korean pines are the most typical forest type in Northeast China. Heilongjiang Province established Fenglin Nature Reserve in the south of the Lesser Khingan Ranges in 1958, where 80 percent of China's Korean pines grow.

The Korean pine, which reaches a mature height of 30-40 meters, is a unique tree species in the northeast of China. A popular ornamental tree in parks and large gardens where the climate is cold, it is also a good architectural material and its seeds contain 70 percent oil.

With an area of 18,400 hectares, the Fengtai Nature Reserve contains 568 kinds of plants and has become a nature museum for biologists to research this kind of forest ecosystem.
