Representatives of the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and Ukrainian celebrities held a press conference in Kiev on Thursday on the Earth Hour 2010 campaign, urging the country's citizens to take active part in this year's global climate event.

Andrei Belokon, a coordinator of Earth Hour 2010 in Ukraine, said during the Earth Hour, which will be held on March 27, Ukraine 's organizers plan to hold a rally and show a film with manpower generators in Kiev.

He also urged Ukrainians to turn off the lights in their homes during the Earth Hour from 8:30 pm to 9:30 pm on the day.

Belokon said 16 Ukrainian cities joined Earth Hour in 2009 and already 9 cities pledged to take part in Earth Hour 2010.

Earth Hour started in 2007 in Sydney, Australia, when 2.2 million homes and businesses turned their lights off for one hour to make their stand against climate change. Only a year later and Earth Hour had become a global movement with more than 50 million people across 35 countries participating.

In March 2009, hundreds of millions of people in 88 countries took part in the third Earth Hour. By now more than 110 countries pledged to participate in the Earth Hour 2010 action aimed at promoting sustainable use of the world's resources and greater awareness of climate change.
