More than 150 passengers were stranded Friday at a port after ship services were suspended in south China's Hainan Province where flights were also canceled as Typhoon Conson crept toward the island province.

Xiuying Port services linking Hainan to other parts of China were stopped at 5 p.m. Thursday, said Mo Guangzhao, customer service manager of the Haikou Gangwu Xiuying Ferry Company.

Local passengers in Haikou went home but more than 150 passengers from other cities were still in the waiting room, he said. The company has provided food and water for the stranded passengers.

Eleven flights due to depart after 4:20 p.m. Friday from Haikou's Meilan Airport were canceled, said the airport.

The airport has notified passengers about the cancellations and promised to help them refund or change their tickets.

Altogether 10 fishing ships were capsized by Conson and sank late Thursday at a port of the Xisha Islands, off the southeastern coast of Hainan after the provincial disaster prevention headquarters alerted fishing boats to return to port. No casualties have been reported.

Conson was downgraded to a tropical storm after wreaking havoc in the Philippines, leaving at least 39 people and another 84 missing, but strengthened again into a typhoon late Thursday.
