A water delivery man cruises on scooter along a flooded street after rainstorms pounded Shanghai this noon. The city's suburban Baoshan Distract recorded 85.9 millimeters of rainfall by 2pm but precipitation in downtown Xujiahui area was only 28.3 millimeters.

The weather is expected to be mainly sunny to cloudy from today to the weekend but the chance of further showers was small, according to officials with the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau.

A subtropical high was still strong above the city, and that would be the main reason for the coming heat, said Zhu Jiehua, a chief service officer with the bureau.

Torrential rain hit the city at noon yesterday, accompanied by lightning and thunder, cooling down the scorching heat but not causing as much trouble as it did on Tuesday when roads were flooded and flights disrupted.

The rain began at about 11am in downtown areas and quickly cooled the city down.

The bureau said the maximum temperature in downtown Xuhui District was just 26.2 degrees at 1:15pm, while it had been over 33 degrees in the morning.

Yesterday's final high was 34.2 degrees, lower than had been forecast. Thunderstorms affected most parts of the city including downtown areas, Baoshan, Minhang, Pudong and Jiading districts and Chongming County, the bureau said.

It issued an orange rain storm alert, second highest of the four-level system, and a yellow lightning alert by 11:31am.

Most rain fell in Baoshan District where 88.4 millimeters was recorded.
