China's Ministry of Land and Resources (MLR) warned Wednesday that the country could encounter frequent geological disasters as it enters flood season in May.
The ministry expects most geological disasters to hit areas in southwestern, south-central and east China and forecasts increases in both the frequency and severity of geological disasters in May from April, it said in a statement on its website.
The statement further said that the central and northern parts of Yunnan Province were likely to face severe geological disasters in May as precipitation levels will be 20-percent to 50-percent higher than in previous years.
According to the MLR, 105 geological disasters hit China in April, leaving 8 people dead and causing direct economic loss of 15.48 million yuan (2.38 million U.S. dollars).
