5.0-magnitude earthquake hits Panama

An earthquake measuring 5.0 on the Richter scale hit southwest of Panama at 11:34 a.m. on Sunday (1634 GMT),the U.S. Geological Survey said, but no tsunami warning was issued.

The earthquake occurred near the border of Panama and Costa Rica with the epicenter located at the Pacific Ocean, 135 km south of David, the capital of western Chiriqui province of Panama, and 184 km away from Golfito, a western Costa Rican city. The depth of the quake was 19.7 km.

The tremor was felt in Chiriqui province. Since the epicenter was over 400 km away from the Panama City, residents of the capital did not feel any movement.

The National Civil Protection System of Panama issued no reports of casualty or tsunami warning.
