Firefighters have been fighting 17 wildfires that have blackened more than 145,600 acres in the drought-plagued U.S. state of Texas, U.S. media reported Wednesday.

A fire in Jasper County had charred more than 4,100 acres before it was contained. Another blaze in Walker County has burnt more than 2,400 acres and forced residents to flee 163 homes. Now crews have about 90 percent containment on that fire.

Crews also have contained a fire that has burned more than 400 acres in Newton county, according to media reports.

A 20,000-acre fire, one of the largest in Texas, is about 40 percent contained.

A fire in Grimes County has so far consumed 26 homes and firefighters are struggling to bring it under control.

Fire crews have battled about 12,362 fires that have burned more than 3 million acres since fire season began in mid-November, according to the media.
