Authorities of the Dominican Republic and Haiti on Sunday issued a red alert over tropical storm "Irene" which is expected to arrive on Monday, warning it can reach hurricane strength.

The Dominican Republic government Sunday issued a red alert in 14 provinces and a yellow alert in 18 provinces.
At a special meeting with all the rescue and emergency organizations, Dominican President Leonel Fernandez announced a package of measures for the incoming storm, including the cancellation of three flights from Las Americas International Airport.
The Haitian government also issued a red alert, urging residents in floods and landslides risk zones to take precautions.
