The Shanghai Metro operator said yesterday that it has developed the technology to renew old subway tickets worn or damaged during years of use with a view to environmental protection.

The operator said 50,000 renewed tickets have been put back into use. Metro officials said the technology can "reduce carbon emission and save cost."

The broken surface of the old tickets is replaced with a new pattern printed without damaging the chip inside, said the Shanghai Shentong Metro Group.

Shentong said more than 40 million recyclable tickets have been issued since 2005, among which nearly 1 million were severely worn and could not be used.
