Water entering the Danjiangkou Reservoir, one source of China's South-North Water Diversion Project, reached 19,100 cubic meters per second on Wednesday afternoon, the highest level this year, local authorities said Wednesday.
The water flow had driven the water level at the upper reaches of the reservoir to 154.08 meters, forcing the dam to open 11 sluices, discharging 10,900 cubic meters per second, according to the Danjiangkou project management bureau.
Located in the middle and upper reaches of Hanjiang River in the central province of Hubei, the reservoir is expected to see more rain in the coming week.
The reservoir released 310 million cubic meters of flood water in August, the first discharge after its bank was heightened to 176.6 meters.
According to the reservoir's heightening project, its normal pool level will reach 170 meters, compared with the current 157 meters, while its storage capacity will increase from 17.45 billion cubic meters to 29.05 billion cubic meters.
