Russia's Shiveluch volcano on the far eastern Kamchatka Peninsula erupted Monday, spewing ash and gas to a height of 10,500 meters above sea level, the official Itar-Tass news agency reported.

The highest-level warning was issued for aviation. All services concerned were informed of the hazard the volcanic ash and gas could pose to aircraft engines.

Shiveluch, standing 3,283 meters above sea level, is Kamchatka's northernmost active volcano. It has been active since September 1980 and has been monitored for more than 30 years.
