Zhenbao Island, a wetland reserve in the northeast province of Heilongjiang, has been included on the Ramsar List of Wetlands of International Importance, according to the administrative bureau of the nature reserve on Monday.

Wang Yanjun, director of the bureau, said that a wetland area of 29,275 hectares on Zhenbao Island has been designated as a wetland of international importance by the Ramsar Convention for its vital importance as a unique wetland for biological diversity.

China now has 41 wetland reserves listed on the Ramsar Convention.

The Chinese name of the island "Zhenbao" means rare treasure. It is located on the Chinese side of the Ussuri River, which is a border river between China and Russia.

Wang said the majority of the nature reserve has remained intact and is home to many species under state-level protection, such as the Manchurian tiger, brown bear and red-crowned crane.

He said the new status will draw more worldwide attention for wetland protection.
