Macedonians Wednesday planted about 5.7 million trees on the country's Tree Day as part of the efforts to replant trees that have been destroyed in wild fires this summer.
The government declared Wednesday a special public holiday to encourage mass participation. People from all walks of life planted trees at some 400 sites across the country.
Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski marked the start of the campaign by planting trees in the country's capital Skopje on Sunday. He was followed by President Gjorge Ivanov on Tuesday.
The tree planting campaign was launched in March 2008 on the initiative of Macedonian pop singer Boris Trajanov. So far 44 million trees have been planted.
Forests cover 9,350 square kilometers in Macedonia out of the country's territory of 25,713 square kilometers.
