Tibet has more than 8,000 black-necked cranes, which is more than 80 percent of the world's total, People's Daily Online reported.

In 1992, the number of black-necked cranes in Tibet autonomous region was only 3,910. The number increased as several reserves for black-necked cranes were set up in the last few decades.

About 200 million yuan ($31.6 million) will be put into two of the major reserves during the 12th Five-Year Plan (2011-2015), the paper said, citing Tibet's forestry bureau.
