A workshop on development of environment-friendly transport vehicles was held here on Friday by the Vietnamese Ministry of Transport (MOT) and the British Embassy in Vietnam.

Addressing the conference, British Ambassador to Vietnam Dr. Antony Stokes said the UK has made an increasing contribution to reducing waste emission worldwide. The UK has developed a sustainable economy with a higher growth rate than the world's average one. The government has launched a cooperative programs between businesses and the public sector with 10 commitments made to support the national economy in reducing carbon emission and expanding international cooperation in the field.

Developing environment-friendly transport means in Vietnam and sharing experience in using the low-carbon emitted transport means in the UK is a potential area for cooperation between Vietnamese and British transport sectors, towards a green and sustainable transport, the ambassador said.

According to the British embassy, passenger coaches discarded 58 percent of total waste by transport means in the UK. More than 400 million pounds (632 million U.S. dollars) from the public budget have been allocated to the design of new technologies to make transport vehicles which would emit the lowest carbon waste.

A map on the impacts of climate change in Southeast Asia when the global temperature rises by four Celsius degrees compiled by the British government was introduced to the participants, together with the MOT's Plan of Action in response to climate change during 2011-2015 period.
