Earth is under pressure and we should take action to save the environment, experts said at a London summit which aims to assess the state of the planet in the run up to Rio+20 UN Conference on Sustainable Development in June.

"The scientific community has a responsibility to urge public officials, citizens, and private firms in all countries to focus on the need for major policy changes to avoid irreparable damage to our planet," Professor Elinor Ostrom, chief scientific advisor to the Planet Under Pressure conference and 2009 economic sciences Nobel laureate, said.

Organizers have prepared nine policy briefs concerning subjects such as energy security, green economy and health and wellbeing to prepare for the upcoming UN Rio+20 summit.

British Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Caroline Spelman said the international community were going to "aim high at Rio."

"At Rio, we will need to make a compelling case of the need for action, and offer real, tangible, evidence-based policy solutions," she said.

The United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development will take place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in June to mark the 20th anniversary of the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development.
