Torrential rain brought to Taiwan over the past two weeks by the southwest monsoon and then tropical storm Talim has cost the island's agricultural sector 976 million new Taiwanese dollars (around 32 million U.S. dollars) in damage as of Monday morning, the island's agricultural authorities has announced.
Crop losses from the rain amounted to 773 million new Taiwanese dollars, with more than 25,000 hectares of farmland damaged, according to latest available figures.
Damage to livestock farming totaled more than 12 million new Taiwanese dollars. The damage was concentrated in Taoyuan county, which reported the loss of 800 hogs and around 70,000 chickens. Aquaculture farms suffered a loss of more than 83 million new Taiwanese dollars, with oyster farming in Chiayi county worst-hit.
Cash aids and low-interest loans have been allocated to help affected farmers, according to the island's authorities.
Rain and the typhoon also caused seven deaths on the island in the past two weeks.
The Typhoon moved away from Taiwan on Thursday last week, and the island will see high temperatures and much-decreased rainfall this week, according to weather forecasts.
