A new study has found that strawberries have other beneficial health effects besides their fantastic taste.

The one-of-a-kind fruit, with its seeds on the outside, is loved by the masses and it grows well throughout Europe, eastern North America, and elsewhere around the world. The USA alone produces over 1.25 million tons of it per year.
Researchers from the University of Warwick Medical School found that strawberries are extremely effective at preventing the development of heart disease and diabetes.
The research was led by Professor Paul Thornally, whose team discovered that extracts from strawberries positively activate a protein in our bodies called Nrf2. This protein has shown to increase antioxidant and other protective activities. It also decreases blood lipids and cholesterol, two factors that can lead to cardiovascular disorders.
Former studies have found that strawberries lowers the "bad" cholesterol in our bodies, which also decreases the chance of diabetes and heart disease. However, the new research proved for the first time that strawberry extracts actively stimulate proteins that offer protection against disease.
According to Professor Thornally, "We've discovered the science behind how strawberries work to increase our in-built defenses to keep cells, organs and blood vessels healthy and which can reduce the risk of developing cardiovascular problems such as heart disease and diabetes. So don't feel guilty about serving up strawberries and cream ... although I'd suggest more strawberries and less or even no cream!"
Future research will try to determine the best varieties of strawberries that will offer the greatest health value for optimum benefit. Researchers will also look at developing the best technique for serving and processing strawberries, and determining the perfect quantity to eat.
