The United States on Thursday described Russian President Vladimir Putin's latest stunt in the sky to guide endangered Siberian cranes as a personal involvement in conserving the migratory birds.

"Well, we've seen the video," U.S. State Department spokesman Patrick Ventrell told reporters at a regular news briefing here. " The Russian government and President Putin himself are very committed to wildlife conservation."
Video footage showed Putin flying a motorized hang glider to lead a flock of crane birds, reportedly raised in captivity, on their migration southward to Central Asia.
"I don't know if all of you know this, but Siberian cranes are a critically endangered species," Ventrell said.
"And so his personal involvement focuses much-needed international attention on the plight of these iconic migratory birds," he stated, adding that Washington looks forward to continued cooperation with Moscow in conserving a number of endangered species like tigers, leopards and polar bears.
