More than 40 migrating birds, including 15 white swans, were discovered dead at a wetland in Xibazi District, East Dongting Lake National Nature Reserve of the city of Yueyang, Hunan Province on Jan 13. Another two poisoned swans were given emergency treatment. The wildlife was under second-class state protection.

Carbofuran-infused sand was found at the scene of the dead bodies, suggesting the cause of their tragic deaths, according to the veterinarian Xie Yongjun. Carbofuran is one of the most toxic carbamate insecticides.

Reserve officers arrested nine individuals suspected of poaching. The local forestry department launched a probe into the birds' deaths.
