The Frankfurt Airport in Germany on Tuesday was temporarily closed due to heavy snow, which is causing transport chaos throughout Western Europe.

The Frankfurt Airport cancelled dozens of flights and announced the airport would be closed until 13:30 local time (1230 GMT) as a result of snow.

German meteorologist Michael Goethel told Xinhua that hours of snowfall on Tuesday left 10 centimeters of snow.

"We estimate we'll have two or three centimeters more this afternoon and this evening," he said, adding the snowfall would stop during the second half of the night.

Heavy snowfall at this time of the year is rare, he said.
