Fifty-five companies in north China were found discharging waste water into drainage wells, pits or ditches in violation to environment rules, officials said after a 40-day investigation.
The officials investigated nearly 26,000 companies in Beijing, Tianjin and the provinces of Hebei, Shanxi, Shandong and Henan. They issued warnings to 424 companies and fined another 88 companies 6.13 million yuan (US$1 million) in total.
The fined companies are also blacklisted as polluters, the Ministry of Environmental Protection said May 9.
But no criminal charges were filed against any enterprise or individual. The maximum fine made was only 500,000 yuan, too small to discourage the polluters, some officials said.
"The 88 companies were just fined 6.13 million yuan, meaning each only paid 70,000 yuan," Ma Yong, an official with the All-China Environment Federation, told Beijing News.
