A woman in southwest China's Yunnan Province died after allegedly being attacked by wild Asian elephants, local police said on Monday.

The body of a 45-year-old woman was found on Saturday in a pine forest near the city of Jinghong in Xishuangbanna Dai Autonomous Prefecture. An initial investigation showed that the woman was attacked by elephants.

Police found a group of 14 wild Asian elephants living near the area where the woman was allegedly attacked. The area showed evidence of an attack having taken place, they said.

The provincial government of Yunnan has faced mounting compensation bills for the damage caused by the state-protected animals. In 2009, it signed a contract with China Pacific Insurance Co., allowing the private insurer to cover some of the losses.
