A recent study published in the journal Nature Climate Change has listed five Chinese coastal cities among the 20 cities in the world most prone to flooding, with Guangzhou at the top of the list.
Also on the list are Shenzhen, Tianjin, Zhanjiang, and Xiamen.
The research predicts an annual global loss from flooding of US$52 billion by the year 2050, after studying 136 of the world's largest port cities.
Flood damage is caused by climate change combined with rapid population increases, economic growth and land subsidence.
Other cities on the list include Mumbai (India), Guayaquil (Ecuador), Miami (U.S.), New Orleans (U.S.), New York (U.S.), Nagoya (Japan), Tampa-St Petersburg (U.S.), Boston (U.S.), Osaka-Kobe (Japan) and Vancouver (Canada).
The research is part of an ongoing project by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).
