A Danish zoo has sparked outrage as it slaughtered a healthy young giraffe and fed it to lions despite a massive online campaign to save it, AFP reported Monday.

The 18-months-old giraffe, named Marius, was shot dead Sunday and autopsied in the presence of visitors to the gardens at Copenhagen Zoo.

Officials outlined the reasons as a lack of space and the need to comply with European rules on inbreeding. The animal had to be put down to ensure a healthy giraffe population, they noted.

After the shooting, there was a public carving of the carcass.
