 1993 Hokkaido earthquake and tsunami

On July 12, 1993, a magnitude of 7.8 earthquake rocked the west coast of Hokkaido and the small, offshore island of Okushiri in the Sea of Japan, generating a major tsunami. Within five minutes, extremely large waves engulfed the Okushiri coastline and the central west coast of Hokkaido. A tsunami warning was given five minutes after the earthquake by Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA). However, this was too late for the inhabitants of Okushiri. The tsunami inundated large parts of Okushiri, leaving 165 people dead.
