Heavy rain sweeps Kyushu area, SW Japan

Heavy rain on Thursday hit parts of Kyushu area in southwest Japan, with rainfall topping a 50-year record in the area, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency ( JMA).

A mountain in Nagasaki city recorded 205 mm of rainfall and Sakai city in Nagasaki Prefecture saw 155.5 mm over three hours, both hitting record levels in half a century.

Warnings of heavy rain by the agency were issued for the three prefectures of Fukuoka, Saga and Nagasaki in the northern Kyushu area.

Some houses were inundated below and about floor level and roads also flooded in Nagasaki city, according to local reports. Landslide also took place in the city.

The JMA also warned of downpour in western Japan on Friday, urging residents to pay attention to possible river flooding, landslides, lightening strikes and tornadoes.
