The meteorological bureau in Pudong upgraded its rain alert to orange -- the second highest level -- at 9:30am.

A road beneath the G2 Shanghai-Beijing Highway in Jiading was closed for two hours during the morning rush after 50 centimeters of water was accumulated on the road, while the Outer Ring highway was flooded and closed for a time about 9am.

"Some drainage systems were blocked by falling leaves, which caused flooding on some roads," an official with the city's flood prevention and control authority said.

Some 10 households and stores in Pudong, Jiading, Baoshan and Fengxian districts were flooded.

However, no major traffic accidents or injuries were reported.

The Shanghai Meteorological Bureau lifted the rainstorm alert at 3:30pm.

The heavy rainfall saw the Air Quality Index staying at 30 yesterday and the air quality watchdog is forecasting good air quality this morning.

However, slight pollution will return later today, the Shanghai Environmental Monitoring Center said.

Meanwhile, temperatures are set to reach 35 degrees for the first time this year on Saturday, said the bureau.
