The Government of Spain announced it will commit EUR 120 million to the Green Climate Fund on Nov. 28. This latest pledge, announced three days before the opening of the 20th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP 20) in Lima, Peru, brings total contributions to the Green Climate Fund up to 9.7 billion U.S. dollars equivalent, provided by 22 countries.
"The Spanish pledge builds further positive momentum in the run up to the COP," said Héla Cheikhrouhou, Executive Director of the Fund. "We call upon all countries who have not yet contributed to join in, and to invest in the Green Climate Fund now," she added.
The multi-year pledge from Spain was jointly announced by the Spanish Ministries of the Economy, Environment and Public Administration. Resource mobilization efforts of the Green Climate Fund continue to make progress.
The COP 20, held in Peru from Dec. 1 to 12, 2014, will be another opportunity for potential contributors to announce their pledges.
