One of the two factories, both in Yanling county, Central China's Hunan province, handles iron alloy and runs 24 hours a day, while the other, which deals in smelting, causes a continual foul smell.

"It smells like rotten eggs and make people dizzy and sick," a tollgate worker said.

The tollgate was put into operation in December 2013. Two months later, workers had to wear masks in order to breathe more easy.

The county's information office said that both factories were shut down for improvements, according to Beijing News.

Two environmental protection officials were also reprimanded, with one deputy suspended from work.
