An earthquake measuring 4.4 on the Richter scale jolted Calabria region in southern Italy on Sunday, local reports said.

According to Italy's National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV), the quake occurred at 10:43 p.m. local time (2143 GMT) at a depth of 11.1 km close to the city of Cosenza.

The tremor was followed by two aftershocks. However there were no reports of damages, according to Rai State television.

Seismologists have said that 58 percent of territory and 40 percent of population in Italy are at continuous seismic risk.

In 2012, two quakes caused 26 deaths in northern Italy, three years after a 5.9-magnitude tremor killed 309 people in the central town of L'Aquila.
