NASA has released two satellite images of the major dust storm that has enveloped heavily-populated areas in the Middle East and North Africa over the past few days.
According to NASA, dust first emerged in Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) satellite imagery in Syria on Sept. 6. By Sept. 7, a thick plume swept across Syria, the Mafraq region of Jordan, and part of Turkey’s Mediterranean coast. By Sept. 8, dust had enveloped all of Lebanon, Israel, Jordan, Cyprus, and the Palestinian Territories. By Sept. 9, it had moved southwest and spread over northeastern Egypt and the Gulf of Suez.
The unseasonal dust storm has left at least six people dead and millions suffering from respiratory problems.
