World's 4th largest lake to disappear by 2020
The Aral Sea, once the world's fourth largest lake, has shrunk more than 90 percent with water levels dropping by 29 meters between 1960 and 2010 due to human activities which have caused a decline in rainfall. The lake is situated in Central Asia, between the southern part of Kazakhstan and northern Uzbekistan. In 2014, the eastern basin of the lake completely dried for the first time in 600 years. At the current rate of decline, scientists predicted that the Aral Sea may disappear completely by 2020.
