Forecasters say a new frontal system is set to disperse the lingering smog which has been engulfing Beijing.

Air quality in Beijing has been on a steady decline since Thursday. PM2.5 readings have surpassed 500.

Over 220 flights had to be cancelled yesterday due to poor visibility.

Aside from Beijing, eight other cities, including Shandong's capital Jinan, have seen pollution levels peak above 500 parts per million.

Another 16 cities are experiencing so-called "heavy" pollution.

Around 50 cities in northern and eastern China are under air pollution alerts.
