A wastewater treatment plant in Beijing's suburban Tongzhou District, the site of the capital's new subsidiary administrative center, will be moved underground to hide its smell and noise, local authorities have announced.

The existing plant, which handles 84 percent of the sewage in the district, has been operating since 2002, becoming a headache for residents of neighborhoods that have been built around it.

The new plant with higher treatment standards and larger water reclamation capacity, will be completed by September, the local government said. The reclaimed water will be used to irrigate green areas and refill rivers and watercourse in Beijing.

The original site will be turned into a leisure park.
