Commitment on the second period of the Kyoto Protocol (KP) is the foundation of a balanced outcome in the climate talks in Cancun, said Brazil's chief climate negotiator Ambassador Luiz A. Figueiredo.

"I agree that countries should compromise," Figueiredo said in an interview with China Daily. "They have to compromise on all elements of the Bali Road Map on the table, but this compromise should focus on the objective -- a balanced outcome. Commitment of the second period of KP is a fundamental part of the result."

The continuation of the Kyoto Protocol was one of the key subjects discussed during the talks, and resolving this critical issue in Cancun will be essential to moving forward in broader negotiations, he said at a presser Tuesday.

"That is one subject that galvanizes the G77, and where you will find very strong support for the continuation of Kyoto through a second and subsequent commitment periods," he said.

"If we don't have a very clear decision on this in Cancun, it will be impossible to have decisions on other issues because we would not have the necessary balance among all the Bali Roadmap elements," he added.

Transparency and International Consultation and Analysis issues have been highlighted in the talks.

"Brazil as a country has no difficulty with transparency, but what we don't want is interference and intrusion," he said.
