Freezing rain in S. China

Freezing rains, the harsh winter weather across south China caused power failures and traffic nightmare in Guizhou Province, Hunan Province and Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region over the weekend.

Local weather bureau said the icy rain will continue to pummel the provinces of Guizhou and Hunan for a week.

The rain that immediately turned into ice on the ground is calledfreezing rain. During the winter, the raindrops become supercooled while passing through a sub-freezing layer of air, many hundred feet (or meters), and then freeze upon impact with any object they encounter.
