Deforestation rate in Amazon region down 75 percent in June

The deforestation rate in the Brazilian Amazon Rainforest region fell 75 percent in June compared to the same period of last year, said a report released on Friday.

The Amazon Rainforest area lost 150 square km last month, 121.5 of which were registered in Para state of Brazil's northern part, said the report done by the Amazon Institute of People and the Environment.

Thirty-six Brazilian municipalities registered a deforested area of 677 square km from Aug. 2008 to June 2009, down 76 percent compared to the period from August 2007 to June 2008.

Since August last year, the deforested area in the Amazon Rainforest region reached 1,234 square km, according to official figures.
