Hong Kong's top official pledged Wednesday to fight online drug sales and will ensure the police have adequate manpower and equipment to tackle cyber crime.
Donald Tsang, chief executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, made the remarks when visiting Hong Kong's Police Headquarters, where he was briefed on the latest situation in youth drug offenses and enforcement action against it.
In response to a recommendation by the Task Force on Youth Drug Abuse, the police have formed a cyber patrol unit to enhance its Internet intelligence gathering capability.
Watching a cyber patrol demonstration, Tsang expressed concern over the trend of online drug sales which make narcotics more accessible to youngsters.
"Summer vacation is a high-risk period for youth drug offenses. Police enforcement will be strengthened and complemented by multi- pronged measures, including drug tests, rehabilitation, publicity and education," he said.
"I hope we can effectively fight youth drug abuse through the mobilization of the whole community," Tsang added.
