Chinese insurers say to give compensation on swine flu

Chinese insurers said Wednesday they would compensate clients who caught swine flu as the epidemic fear spread across the world.

Greatwall Life Insurance Co., Ltd. and Generali China Life Insurance Co., Ltd. said Wednesday that though the epidemic is not on compensation lists in health and life insurance, clients can receive compensation for medical treatment or even deaths related swine flu.

AIG General Insurance Company China Limited clients with travel insurance will be compensated if they catch swine flu when traveling abroad. The travel insurance will cover all the medical fees.

"The diseases that are clearly specified would not be covered. Others, such as bird flu or swine flu, would usually be compensated," said Chen Lixiao, a manager with the Beijing branch of AIG General Insurance Company China Limited.

He said they made the declarations to to dispel worries from clients.
