Zimbabwean Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai on Monday said the car crash which injured himself and killed his wife was an accident.
Tsvangirai told a crowd here after returning from neighboring Botswana that there was no foul play and the crash on Friday was just an accident.
Tsvangirai's car crashed with a truck on Friday as the prime minister was travelling to his rural home in Buhera. He suffered injuries while his wife Susan Tsvangirai was killed in the tragedy.
The prime minister went to Botswana after spending one night in a Zimbabwean hospital. Reports said his wife would be buried in their rural hometown on Wednesday.
Tsvangirai's supporters blamed on insufficient security provided by President Robert Mugabe. Tendai Biti, the country's new finance minister, said that the crash "could have been avoided " if Tsvangirai had police escort, although his Toyota Land Cruiser was accompanied by four vehicles.
Tsvangirai's party, the Movement for Democratic Change, called Saturday for an investigation into the collision.
Tsvangirai, who turns 57 next week, was a long-time opposition leader. He was sworn in on Feb. 11 as Zimbabwe's prime minister in a power-sharing deal which was to end almost a year of deadly stalemate with President Robert Mugabe.
President Mugabe on Friday visited Tsvangirai in the hospital to offer his condolences following the tragic accident.
