At least 12 people, including a two-year-old child, were killed and several others injured in landlides due to night-long heavy rains in a slum area near India' s financial capital Mumbai, a senior police official said Friday.

"The latest casualty figure is 12, which includes a two-year- old girl, who was killed in landslides in Saki Naka in Mumbai's suburb Andheri. The injured have been admitted to a local hospital. Several buildings have also been damaged in the landslides," the official said.

Meanwhile, the all night downpour has once again brought Mumbai to a standstill, with trains running late by half an hour and many stations were inundated.

"Several areas are waterlogged and fire brigade has been pressed into service to clear the roads along with help from civic authorities," he said.

The Chief Minister of the western state of Maharashtra, whose capital is Mumbai, has announced a compensation package of 100,000 rupees (2,000 U.S. dollars) to all those killed and up to 50,000 rupees (1,000 U.S. dollars) for those injured in the landslides.
