Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi met with the current president of the UN General Assembly, Ali Treki, on Tuesday, pledging China's continued work in addressing global and other problems.
During the meeting, Yang stressed the importance of Chinese President Hu Jintao attending the ongoing UN meetings. China values the functions of the United Nations and will continue to play a positive and constructive role in seeking solutions to global and international issues, Yang said.
Yang congratulated Treki on his election as UN General Assembly president.
Treki, who previously served as Libya's foreign minister and later as the country's UN envoy, was elected president of the 64th session of the UN General Assembly on June 10, 2009.
Treki said the Chinese president's speech at the UN climate change summit is of great importance to global efforts on climate change and also to the success of the UN climate change conference scheduled to be held in Copenhagen, Denmark, in December.
Treki spoke highly of China's measures in response to climate change and the major contributions China has made in this regard.
China has been playing a positive and constructive role in international affairs, and Hu's speeches at other UN meetings will also help promote peace, stability and development of the world, said Treki.
