US death toll in Iraq hits 4,000
Adjust font size:

Roadside bombs were the top killer of the US troops, resulting in about 40 percent of the total death, according to Icasualties, a Website which traces the coalition casualties.

The US military suffered the largest loss of 901 lives in 2007, when the death toll surpassed 100 for three consecutive months in a frenzied effort to neutralize rampant violence with reinforced troops.

The deadliest month occurred in November 2004 when 137 American troops died, according to the Website. The loss was mainly derived from the offensive on the then insurgent hotbed of Anbar province.

Anbar, which has become an example of security and peace following the local's uprising against the al-Qaida, also saw the largest US troop death of 1,282, followed by Baghdad with 1,255 and Salaheddin province with 376.
