The death toll of a massive fire that engulfed a building on Jiaozhou Road in Shanghai had risen to 53 by 9:30 a.m.Tuesday, China.org.cn reports. The fire also injured 70, of which 17 are in critical condition. The fire was caused by four unlicensed welders working on the scaffolding, according to an initial investigation. The 28-story apartment building was being renovated when it caught fire at about 2:15 p.m. Monday. The building was built in January 1998. The fire was mostly extinguished by 6:30 p.m. after 122 fire engines were dispatched, which included 17 ladder trucks as well as more than 1,300 firefighters. More than 100 residents were saved. The ladder trucks could only reach as high as the 20th floor, which subsequently hampered the rescue effort. |
