Shanghai to drill more water wells

In response to the discovery of radiation-tainted water following the nuclear plant explosion in Japan, Meng Mingqun, director of Shanghai Water Supply Administration, said the city will drill over 40 additional deep wells for emergency use in future disasters, Xinhua reported. The city currently has 10.
Meng said water sources near residential areas are more likely to be used in emergencies.
Zhang Jiayi, director of Shanghai Water Authority, said that inland surface water, such as Shanghai's water resources, is easy to pollute and hard to control once polluted. Thus, the city plans to spend over 1.1 billion yuan in building larger water sources and purification plants and to switch to much safer water sources over next five years, Zhang said.
