And a mysterious tunnel is being built, fueling speculation that a secret underground lair is what's really under construction.

The White House already has a number of tunnels; the exact number is, of course, classified.

The most well known is the underground corridor that leads to the President's Emergency Operations Center, a supposedly nuclear-proof bunker located six stories under the East Wing.

It was from this bunker and its adjacent Executive Briefing Room that Dick Cheney and Condoleezza Rice, among others, directed government operations on Sept. 11, 2001.

白宫密建“末日地堡”

       据英国《每日邮报》报道，未来4年，美国白宫西翼大楼将暂时从人们视线中“消失”。

       白宫正在耗资8600万美元大兴土木，在白宫西翼大楼附近挖掘地道，有传闻称，白宫实际上是在秘密修建一个大型“末日地堡”。

       事实上，白宫已经有了数条地道，当然具体有几条属于机密。

       其中，最广为人知的是通向白宫“总统紧急行动中心”的那条地下走廊，它位于白宫东翼地下6层，是一个足以防范原子弹爆炸的地堡。

       2001年9月11日，当世贸双塔遭遇恐怖袭击之后，当时的美国副总统迪克·切尼、前美国国务卿康多莉扎·赖斯等白宫高官正是潜入了这个地堡，在那里指挥政府运作。
